What it is: Organic India Sat Isabgol is loose organic psyllium husk from the seed of Plantago ovata, packed in a 100 g jar. It is not a capsule. It is a single-ingredient fibre that you stir into water or juice, and it contains no added fillers, sweeteners or preservatives. Organic India is now part of Tata Consumer Products.
What’s in Sat Isabgol
There is one ingredient: organic psyllium seed husk (Plantago ovata). Per 100 g, the label shows:
| Nutrient | Per 100 g |
|---|---|
| Energy | 375 kcal |
| Carbohydrate (of which sugars) | 89.5 g (0 g) |
| Dietary fibre | 78.2 g |
| Protein | 4.1 g |
| Fat | 0 g |
| Sodium | 84 mg |
With 78.2 g of fibre per 100 g, it is very high in fibre. The product is labelled organic, gluten-free and vegetarian. Because it is pure plant husk, it is also vegan by composition. A 5 g serving provides roughly 3.9 g of fibre.
How it’s traditionally used
Isabgol has been part of everyday Indian kitchens and Ayurvedic and Unani practice for centuries. Its name is thought to come from the Persian asp-ghol, meaning “horse’s ear”, after the shape of the seed. Isabgol husk is sweet, cooling and unctuous in quality. In Ayurveda it is traditionally used to support regular, comfortable digestion and to soothe Pitta, the dosha associated with heat. When the husk meets water it swells into a soft gel, a property the tradition has long valued.
How to take it
The manufacturer suggests the following for adults and children over 12:
- Stir 5 g (about 1 tablespoon) into at least 200 ml of water, juice or another drink, and drink it straight away before it thickens.
- Follow it with an extra glass of water.
- Take 1 serving up to twice a day, preferably before or between meals.
The 100 g jar provides 20 servings. That is 20 days at one serving a day, or 10 days at two.
Who it suits — and who should check first
- It suits people who want a plain fibre with no flavourings, sweeteners or added extras.
- Take it with plenty of liquid. Psyllium swells as it absorbs water. Taken without enough liquid, it can cause choking or an obstruction. Do not use it if you have difficulty swallowing.
- Take other medicines or supplements at least 1–2 hours apart from psyllium, because fibre can slow their absorption. If you take regular medication, check with your pharmacist first.
- If you are new to fibre supplements, start with a smaller amount. Some bloating is common at first.
- Once opened, close the jar tightly and keep it dry, because the husk absorbs moisture from the air.
How it compares
Whole husk is light and flaky, and it thickens a little more slowly than finely milled psyllium powder, which some people find easier to drink. Capsules avoid the texture altogether, but you need several of them to reach a 5 g serving. Organic India also makes flavoured Sat Isabgol blends with added ingredients. This jar is the plain, single-ingredient version.
Common questions
Is this husk, powder or capsules?
It is loose organic psyllium whole husk in a 100 g jar. Some Indian retailers call it “whole husk powder”. It is not a capsule product.
Can I mix it into food instead of water?
You can stir it into yoghurt or a smoothie, but you still need to drink plenty of water with it and afterwards.
Why does it go thick so quickly?
Psyllium husk soaks up water and forms a gel within a minute or two. Stir it in and drink it straight away. If it is too thick, add more liquid.
