How to take it
The label direction is one capsule twice a day after meals, with water. Taking it after food rather than before is the standard advice for gokshura, as with most fruit and bark preparations. If you would rather ease in, one capsule after your main meal for the first week is a reasonable start.
Gokshura is used as a course rather than occasionally, and 60 capsules at two a day is a clean one-month run. Fixing it to two meals you already eat every day — breakfast and dinner — is the simplest way to keep it consistent.
Do not exceed the stated dose. This is a food supplement, not a medicine. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, take prescription medication, or have a diagnosed condition, speak to your GP or pharmacist before starting it.
Nutrition information
There is no authorised health claim on the GB Nutrition and Health Claims Register for Tribulus terrestris, so we make none on this page. What follows is a description of the plant, its names, its place in Ayurvedic tradition and the contents of the pack — not a statement about what it does in the body. Gokshura is widely marketed online with claims that are not permitted in Great Britain; we have deliberately left those out.
Gokshura is a plant material, not a nutrient source. It is not a meaningful source of vitamins, minerals, protein or energy and carries no nutrition declaration of the kind found on a multivitamin.
In detail
The plant
Gokshura is a low, sprawling annual of the Zygophyllaceae family that hugs the ground on dry, poor, sandy soil — roadsides, field margins, waste ground. It produces small yellow flowers and then the distinctive fruit: a hard, five-segmented burr with sharp spines, roughly a centimetre across. Those spines are why the plant is known in English as puncture vine and in Sanskrit as gokshura, which translates roughly as “cow’s hoof” — a reference to the shape of the burr, and to the fact that cattle stepping on them was how the plant announced itself.
It is the dried fruit that is harvested, cleaned of the worst of the spines, and milled. What goes into a capsule is that milled fruit. The plant grows across India, the Middle East, southern Europe and much of Africa, and it has naturalised as a weed in Australia and the Americas.
What gokshura is called
The naming is a genuine obstacle when you are searching for it. In Sanskrit it is gokshura or gokshuraka; in Hindi, gokhru or gokharu; in Bengali, gokhri; in Tamil, nerunji; in Telugu, palleru; in Gujarati, gokharu. English listings use tribulus, Tribulus terrestris, puncture vine, caltrop and goathead. Confusingly, some Indian formulations sold as “gokhru” use Pedalium murex — large gokhru — which is a different plant. This pack is Tribulus terrestris, the small gokhru, which is what Ayurvedic texts mean by gokshura.
Capsules, tablets or churna
Gokshura is sold as loose fruit powder (churna), as tablets and as capsules. The loose powder is traditional and cheapest per gram, but it is dry, gritty and hard to take without a strong drink to carry it. Tablets pack more material into each unit. Capsules, as here, hold less per unit than a tablet but are easier on people who dislike the taste, since the shell only dissolves once swallowed. For a first course, capsules are usually the format people stick with.
About Himalaya Wellness
Himalaya has manufactured herbal products in India since 1930 and runs its single-herb range to a consistent specification batch after batch. In a category where the same herb bought from two different suppliers can differ noticeably in quality and potency, that consistency is worth a good deal. It is the main reason Himalaya tends to be the starting point for anyone buying a single Ayurvedic herb for the first time rather than a house-brand alternative.
Buying this in the UK
We ship this pack from India directly to your UK address. Orders are dispatched within 24 to 72 hours and take 5 to 7 working days in transit, so most arrive 6 to 10 working days after you order. UK delivery is £4.99 flat, and free on orders over £100.
We are registered for UK VAT, so on orders up to £135 the VAT is charged at checkout and there is nothing further to pay when your parcel arrives. On orders above £135, import VAT, any duty and a carrier handling fee are payable by you on delivery — our shipping policy sets out exactly how that works.
What arrives is the sealed manufacturer retail pack with the batch number and expiry date printed on it, which is worth checking the moment it turns up.
Questions people ask
Is this genuine Himalaya Gokshura?
Yes. It is the sealed Himalaya Wellness retail pack with the manufacturer batch code and expiry date intact, sourced through the normal Indian retail chain, and shipped to you sealed. If a pack ever arrives unsealed or with the batch details obscured, contact us and we will replace it.
Is gokshura the same as tribulus?
Yes. Gokshura is the Sanskrit name for Tribulus terrestris, the plant sold in English-speaking markets as tribulus or puncture vine. One caution: some Indian products labelled gokhru contain Pedalium murex, a different plant known as large gokhru. This pack is Tribulus terrestris.
How long does one pack last?
Sixty capsules at the label direction of two a day is a thirty-day supply, so one pack is a month. At one capsule a day it stretches to two months. If you intend to run a longer course, ordering two packs together saves a second delivery.
Are the capsules suitable for vegetarians?
Yes. The shell is a vegetarian capsule, not gelatin, so the product is suitable for vegetarians and vegans. The contents are milled gokshura fruit with no animal-derived ingredients.
Do you ship gokshura anywhere in the UK?
Yes, to any UK address including Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Channel Islands. We ship from India, so allow 24 to 72 hours for dispatch and 5 to 7 working days in transit. Delivery is £4.99 flat and free on orders over £100. On orders up to £135 there is nothing to pay on delivery; above £135 import charges apply.
Suitability, storage and allergens
Suitable for vegetarians and vegans. Contains no gluten, dairy, egg, soy, nuts or added sugar. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight with the cap firmly closed. Keep out of the reach of children. Use by the date printed on the pack.
