SKU: B008PODZ4G Category: Brand:

What it is: Himalaya Speman is a men’s herbal tablet from Himalaya Wellness. It has been part of the company’s range for decades. It combines Salabmisri, Kokilaksha, Gokshura, Kapikachchhu (velvet bean) and other classical Ayurvedic botanicals, and this pack contains 60 tablets.

What’s in Speman

Himalaya names Kapikachchhu (cowhage/velvet bean), Kokilaksha (Hygrophila) and Gokshura (small caltrops) as the key ingredients. The full published formula lists these botanicals per tablet:

  • Salabmisri (Orchis mascula) – 130 mg
  • Kokilaksha (Hygrophila auriculata) – 64 mg
  • Gokshura (Tribulus terrestris) – 64 mg
  • Vriddhadaru (Argyreia speciosa) – 64 mg
  • Jeevanti (Leptadenia reticulata)
  • Vanya Kahu (Lactuca scariola, wild lettuce)
  • Kapikachchhu (Mucuna pruriens)
  • Shaileyam (Parmelia perlata, stone flower lichen)
  • Suvarnavang (mosaic gold, a traditional mineral preparation)

The amounts shown are the ones that agree across published labels. Sources give different figures for the other ingredients, so we have left those out. The tablets are bound with standard tableting agents, including cellulose derivatives, magnesium stearate and silicon dioxide.

How it’s traditionally used

Speman draws on the Ayurvedic tradition of rasayana, the use of tonic herbs to sustain strength and vigour. Kapikachchhu and Gokshura are traditionally used in Ayurveda as balya (strength-giving) herbs for men. Salabmisri is a prized tuber in Unani and Ayurvedic practice, traditionally taken as a nourishing tonic. Jeevanti’s name means “life-giving”, and Ayurveda traditionally classes it as a rejuvenating herb. In dosha terms, many of these herbs are sweet and nourishing and are traditionally chosen to balance Vata. The formula is traditionally used in Ayurveda as a general men’s vitality tonic.

How to take it

Himalaya’s Indian pack advises asking a practitioner for the dosage that suits you. Himalaya’s European labelling suggests 2 tablets twice daily before meals for 8 weeks, then 1 tablet twice daily for a further 8 weeks. At 4 tablets a day a pack of 60 lasts 15 days. At 2 tablets a day it lasts 30 days, so a full 16-week course needs several packs.

Who it suits — and who should check first

  • It is made for adult men who prefer a traditional multi-herb tablet to a single-ingredient supplement.
  • Kapikachchhu (Mucuna pruriens) naturally contains L-dopa. Do not combine it with medicines for Parkinson’s disease, MAO inhibitors or other drugs that act on dopamine without medical advice.
  • Gokshura (Tribulus) may interact with blood-pressure and diabetes medication. Check with your GP or pharmacist if you take any regular medicines or have a kidney condition.
  • Wild lettuce can cause mild drowsiness in some people.
  • The formula includes a traditional mineral preparation (Suvarnavang). We have not been able to confirm whether the product is suitable for vegans.
  • It is not intended for women or for anyone under 18.

How it compares

Himalaya also sells several of these herbs as single-ingredient products, such as Gokshura or Kapikachchhu on their own. Those make it easier to see exactly what you are taking. Speman follows the classical Ayurvedic approach of blending complementary herbs in moderate amounts. Compared with an ashwagandha-only product, Speman covers a wider group of traditional men’s tonic herbs. It is not standardised to any single compound.

Common questions

Has the Speman formula changed?

Himalaya’s current Indian product page names only three key herbs: Kapikachchhu, Kokilaksha and Gokshura. Older and European labels list the full multi-herb formula above, so always check the ingredient panel on your pack.

How long is a typical course?

Himalaya’s European labelling describes a 16-week programme: 8 weeks at 4 tablets a day, then 8 weeks at 2 tablets a day.

Should it be taken with food?

The European label suggests taking the tablets before meals. If you are unsure, follow the label on your pack.
