How to take it

The usual direction is one to two tablets a day with water, after food. At one a day the 120-tablet pack runs for four months; at two a day it runs for two. Because it is a whole-herb tablet rather than a concentrated extract, bhumi amla is generally taken steadily over a period rather than in short bursts.

Take it with or after a meal unless the pack says otherwise. Pick a fixed point in the day and stay with it — four months is a long run and the main reason people fall off a herbal course is that it was never attached to a routine in the first place.

Do not exceed the stated dose. This is a food supplement, not a medicine. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, take prescription medication, or have a diagnosed condition, speak to your GP or pharmacist before you start.

Nutrition information

There is no authorised health claim on the GB Nutrition and Health Claims Register for Phyllanthus niruri, and we make none. This page describes the plant, its names, its history and what is in the pack. It does not say what the herb does in the body, because in Great Britain no such statement is permitted for this plant — regardless of what you may read on overseas listings.

Bhumi amla is a plant material, not a nutrient source. It is not a meaningful source of vitamins, minerals, protein or energy and carries no nutrition declaration of the kind found on a multivitamin.

In detail

The plant

Bhumi amla is a small annual of the Phyllanthaceae family, rarely taller than sixty centimetres, with slender branches carrying two neat rows of small oval leaves that fold shut at dusk. Turn a branch over and you find the detail that names it: tiny greenish fruits hanging in a row along the underside of the stem, each one a miniature of the amla fruit. Hence bhumyamalaki — amla of the ground.

It grows as a common weed across India, Southeast Asia, the Caribbean and South America, favouring cultivated ground and field margins during the monsoon. Unlike arjuna or ashwagandha, where only bark or root is used, the entire plant is harvested here — leaf, stem, fruit and root — then dried and milled whole.

Bhumi amla is not amla

This trips up a great many buyers. Amla, the Indian gooseberry, is Phyllanthus emblica: a tree, whose large sour fruit is the part used and which is a genuine source of vitamin C. Bhumi amla is Phyllanthus niruri: a small ground-level herb, used whole, entirely different in composition and use. They share a genus and a name fragment and nothing else that matters. If you came here looking for amla, this is not that product.

What bhumi amla is called

In Sanskrit it is bhumyamalaki; in Hindi, bhui amla, bhumi amla or jangli amli; in Tamil, keezhanelli or keezharnelli; in Malayalam, keezharnelli; in Telugu, nela usiri; in Kannada, nelanelli; in Bengali, bhui amla. English and Latin American listings use stonebreaker, chanca piedra, gale of the wind, seed-under-leaf and quebra pedra. All refer to the same plant.

Tablets versus powder

Bhumi amla is sold as loose churna, as tablets and occasionally as capsules. The loose powder is traditional and cheap by weight, but it is bitter — noticeably more so than most Ayurvedic powders — and few people take it that way for months on end. Tablets, as here, fix the dose at 500 mg and remove the taste problem entirely, which matters a great deal on a course measured in months rather than days.

About Merlion Naturals

Merlion Naturals is an Indian supplement manufacturer that concentrates on single-herb whole-plant tablets at stated strengths, rather than proprietary blends. The practical advantage is that you know exactly what is in each tablet — 500 mg of the herb and nothing hidden behind a proprietary blend label. The 120-tablet pack size is deliberate: it matches the length of course this particular herb is traditionally used for.

Buying this in the UK

We ship this pack from India directly to your UK address. Orders are dispatched within 24 to 72 hours and take 5 to 7 working days in transit, so most arrive 6 to 10 working days after you order. UK delivery is £4.99 flat, and free on orders over £100.

We are registered for UK VAT, so on orders up to £135 the VAT is charged at checkout and there is nothing further to pay when your parcel arrives. On orders above £135, import VAT, any duty and a carrier handling fee are payable by you on delivery — our shipping policy sets out exactly how that works.

What arrives is the sealed manufacturer retail pack with the batch number and expiry date printed on it, which is worth checking the moment it turns up.

Questions people ask

What is bhumi amla?

It is the dried, milled whole plant of Phyllanthus niruri, a small herb that grows across India and much of the tropics, compressed into a 500 mg tablet. It is a single-herb food supplement with no other active ingredients. It is also sold internationally under the names stonebreaker and chanca piedra.

Is bhumi amla the same as amla?

No. Amla is Phyllanthus emblica, the Indian gooseberry, a tree fruit and a source of vitamin C. Bhumi amla is Phyllanthus niruri, a small ground herb used whole. They are different plants with different uses despite the similar name. If you wanted amla, you want a different product.

How strong are these tablets?

Each tablet contains 500 mg of Phyllanthus niruri whole-herb powder. That is the plant itself rather than a concentrated extract, so the figure is directly comparable with a 500 mg measure of the loose churna. There are 120 tablets in the pack, giving 60 g of herb in total.

How long does one pack last?

At one tablet a day, four months. At two a day, two months. Bhumi amla is traditionally taken as a sustained course, which is why the pack is sized at 120 rather than the 60 that is standard for most single-herb products.

Do you ship bhumi amla anywhere in the UK?

Yes, to any UK address including Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Channel Islands. We ship from India, so allow 24 to 72 hours for dispatch and 5 to 7 working days in transit. Delivery is £4.99 flat and free on orders over £100. On orders up to £135 there is nothing to pay on delivery; above £135 import charges apply.
