What it is: Baidyanath Medohar Guggulu is a classical Ayurvedic tablet based on purified guggulu resin (Commiphora mukul), with about 249 mg per tablet, combined with Trikatu, Triphala and three other traditional herbs. It is made by Baidyanath in Nagpur, India, and the standard bottle holds 120 tablets.

What’s in Medohar Guggulu

Composition per tablet, as listed for the Baidyanath 120-tablet bottle:

Ingredient Per tablet
Shuddha Guggulu, purified resin (Commiphora mukul) 249.3 mg
Sonth, dry ginger (Zingiber officinale) 27.7 mg
Kali mirch, black pepper (Piper nigrum) 27.7 mg
Pippali, long pepper (Piper longum) 27.7 mg
Chitrak (Plumbago zeylanica) 27.7 mg
Nagarmotha (Cyperus rotundus) 27.7 mg
Vidang (Embelia ribes) 27.7 mg
Haritaki (Terminalia chebula) 27.7 mg
Bibhitaki (Terminalia bellirica) 27.7 mg
Amla (Emblica officinalis) 27.7 mg

The tablets also contain castor (erand) oil as a processing aid, plus the excipients starch, gum acacia, lactose and magnesium stearate. Ginger, black pepper and long pepper together make up Trikatu (“three pungents”). Haritaki, Bibhitaki and Amla make up Triphala.

How it’s traditionally used

Guggulu is the aromatic gum resin of the Commiphora tree. For centuries it has been one of Ayurveda’s most important carriers for herbal formulas. Before use it is traditionally purified (shodhana), often by boiling it with Triphala, which is why the label says “Shuddha”.

In Ayurvedic tradition, Medohar Guggulu is classed as a warming, Kapha-balancing formula. Its pungent herbs (Trikatu and Chitrak) are traditionally used to kindle agni, the digestive fire. Triphala, Nagarmotha and Vidang are long-standing Ayurvedic herbs for digestive balance. The formula is traditionally taken as part of a wider routine of diet, daily movement and seasonal habits rather than on its own.

How to take it

Baidyanath suggests 2 tablets twice a day with lukewarm water. Some retailer listings give 1–2 tablets twice daily, so beginners often start at the lower end. At the full 4 tablets a day, a 120-tablet bottle lasts 30 days. At 2 tablets a day it lasts 60 days. Taking it after meals is gentler on the stomach.

Who it suits, and who should check first

  • Not vegan: the tablets contain lactose (milk sugar) as an excipient.
  • Medication: guggul is reported to interact with some medicines, including blood thinners and thyroid medication, and may affect how other medicines are absorbed. Speak to your GP or pharmacist first if you take any regular medication.
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding: guggulu and Chitrak are traditionally avoided during pregnancy. Don’t use this product if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • The formula is pungent and warming. People with a sensitive stomach may notice mild digestive discomfort; take it after food, and stop if it doesn’t suit you.
  • Not suitable for children.

How it compares

Single-herb guggul capsules give you the resin on its own. Medohar Guggulu is a traditional multi-herb formula in which guggulu carries Trikatu, Triphala and other herbs. If you mainly want Triphala for gentle digestive balance, Triphala tablets or powder are the simpler choice. Within Baidyanath’s own guggulu range, Medohar is the Kapha-focused formula, while Kaishore Guggulu is traditionally used for skin and Yograj Guggulu for joints.

Common questions

Should I chew or swallow the tablets?

Baidyanath’s directions say to take them with lukewarm water. Some listings say they may be chewed, but swallowing them whole with warm water after meals is the most common way to take them.

What does “Shuddha” Guggulu mean?

It means “purified”. Raw guggulu resin is traditionally processed before use in formulas, usually by boiling it with herbal decoctions such as Triphala.

Can I take it with Triphala?

Medohar Guggulu already contains all three Triphala fruits, so most people don’t need a separate Triphala supplement. Ask a qualified practitioner if you want to combine them.

How many bottles do I need?

At Baidyanath’s full suggested dose of 4 tablets a day, one 120-tablet bottle covers a month. Packs of two or three bottles suit longer routines.
