What it is: Divya Medha Vati Extra Power is a multi-herb Ayurvedic tablet made by Divya Pharmacy for Patanjali. Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri) and Shankhpushpi are the main herbs, with around 15 other classical botanicals and mineral preparations. Each pack holds 120 film-coated tablets of about 500 mg.
What’s in Medha Vati Extra Power
Despite the product name, this is not a single-herb Bacopa supplement. Brahmi is the largest single ingredient, and it sits within a broader classical formula. The published composition for each 500 mg tablet is mostly wet extracts (not less than 60% total solids) plus fine herb powders:
| Ingredient | Per tablet |
|---|---|
| Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri) – extract + powder | 113.85 mg + 37.47 mg |
| Shankhpushpi (Convolvulus pluricaulis) – extract + powder | 113.85 mg + 37.47 mg |
| Vacha / calamus (Acorus calamus) root – extract + powder | 56.77 mg + 3.70 mg |
| Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) root – extract + powder | 56.77 mg + 9.37 mg |
| Malkangini (Celastrus paniculatus) seed – extract + powder | 56.77 mg + 9.37 mg |
| Ustekhaddus (Lavandula stoechas), Saunf (fennel), Pushkarmool (Inula racemosa), Ganjvan (Onosma bracteatum) – extracts | 56.77 mg each |
| Shatavari, Sugandhbala (Valeriana wallichii) – powders | 9.37 mg each |
| Bal Bach (Iris germanica) – powder | 5.66 mg |
| Praval Pishti (coral), Jaharmohra Pishti, Mukta Pishti (pearl) | 1.87 mg, 0.94 mg, 0.37 mg |
The excipients are gum acacia, colloidal silica (Aerosil) and talc.
How it’s traditionally used
The name comes from medha, the Sanskrit word for intellect and retentive memory. Brahmi and Shankhpushpi belong to the classical medhya rasayana group, herbs that Ayurveda traditionally uses to support mental clarity, learning and a calm mind. Ayurveda describes Vacha and Malkangini (Jyotishmati) as sharpening for the senses, and Ashwagandha and Shatavari add nourishing, grounding qualities. The formula is traditionally used to steady an aggravated Vata, the dosha linked with restlessness and scattered attention.
How to take it
The manufacturer suggests 1–2 tablets twice daily on an empty stomach with water, or as directed by a practitioner. Leave at least half an hour between the tablets and food, drinks or other medicines. At 2 tablets a day a pack of 120 lasts 60 days. At the maximum of 4 tablets a day it lasts 30 days.
Who it suits — and who should check first
- This product suits adults who want a broad, classical Brahmi formula rather than a single standardised extract.
- It contains coral and pearl preparations, so it is not suitable for vegans.
- It contains calamus (Vacha). Calamus naturally contains beta-asarone, a compound that food law restricts, so do not exceed the stated dose or use it for long, unbroken periods.
- Ashwagandha and valerian (Sugandhbala) may add to the effect of sedatives. Ashwagandha may also be unsuitable if you have a thyroid condition or take thyroid medication. Check with your GP or pharmacist first if you take any regular medicines.
- Patanjali’s Indian label states the tablets are to be taken under medical supervision. It is not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or for children, unless a professional advises otherwise.
How it compares
Single-herb Brahmi capsules usually contain one standardised Bacopa extract, which makes the dose easy to track. Medha Vati takes the classical approach of many herbs in modest amounts. If you want Bacopa alone, choose a single-herb product. If you prefer a traditional blend, this tablet fits.
Common questions
Is this the same as standard Divya Medha Vati?
No. Patanjali makes a standard Medha Vati and this “Extra Power” version. The Extra Power tablet is built on concentrated wet extracts and has a longer ingredient list.
Is it a pure Bacopa monnieri supplement?
No. Bacopa (Brahmi) is the joint-largest ingredient, alongside Shankhpushpi, but the tablet contains more than 15 other herbs and minerals.
Why take it on an empty stomach?
That is the manufacturer’s direction. Patanjali also advises a 30-minute gap between the tablets and food or other medicines.
