Isabgol is the Indian name for psyllium husk — the fibrous outer coat of the seeds of Plantago ovata, a plant grown mainly in Gujarat. It is the same ingredient sold in UK chemists as psyllium, and one of the few Ayurvedic staples that British shoppers already know under another name. Isabgol is almost pure soluble fibre, which is why it swells into a gel in water. This FAQ covers the questions UK customers ask us most: how to take it, with what, and when.

What is isabgol and is it the same as psyllium husk?
Yes — they are the same thing. Isabgol (sometimes ‘sat isabgol’, meaning pure husk) is the Hindi/Urdu name; psyllium is the name used in Europe and North America. It is a source of dietary fibre with a long history of use in India and the Middle East, and it is a food ingredient rather than a herb with active compounds.
How do I take isabgol?
Stir one to two teaspoons into a full glass (at least 250ml) of water, milk or juice, and drink it straight away before it thickens. Then drink another glass of water. The most important rule with psyllium is plenty of liquid: taken with too little fluid it can swell in the throat. Start with one teaspoon a day for the first week.
Should I take isabgol with water or with milk?
Both are traditional. With warm water is the everyday method in most Indian homes. With warm milk is a common evening habit, and many people find it more palatable. Yoghurt or buttermilk (lassi) is a third option. Whatever you choose, use a full glass and drink promptly.
Is it better to take isabgol in the morning or at night?
Either works; consistency matters more than timing. Traditional Indian use favours the evening, with warm milk or water, before bed. If you take medication, leave at least two hours between the medicine and the isabgol, because fibre can affect how some medicines are absorbed — ask your pharmacist.
How much isabgol should I take per day?
Most packs direct 5–10g (one to two teaspoons) once or twice a day, always with a full glass of liquid. Do not exceed the pack directions. Psyllium products in the UK are sold as food or food supplements, and no health claim for psyllium is currently authorised on the GB register, so we describe traditional use only.
Sat isabgol vs isabgol powder vs capsules — what is the difference?
Sat isabgol is the whole husk — light, flaky and the most traditional form. Powder is the husk ground fine; it mixes more smoothly and is what most Western psyllium brands sell. Capsules are convenient but you need several to reach a teaspoon’s worth, and you must still drink a full glass of water with them. Whole husk is the best value; powder is the easiest for beginners.
Is isabgol safe to take every day?
Psyllium has been consumed daily as a fibre source for generations. Always take it with enough liquid, keep to the pack dose, and seek advice from a pharmacist or GP before use if you have any swallowing difficulty, a digestive condition, are pregnant, or take medication. Stop and seek advice if you experience discomfort.
