Gym and Running: An Ayurvedic Training-Day Plan (Shilajit, Creatine, Electrolytes) — UK

Ayurvedic training-day plan for gym and running with shilajit, creatine and electrolytes – KantiGlow cover

Creatine searches are up 118% and electrolyte searches on Boots.com are up 755%, while shilajit has become the Ayurvedic product British gym-goers ask about most. This plan puts the two worlds in one training day: shilajit and ashwagandha as the traditional Ayurvedic ‘bala’ (strength) herbs, alongside the three sports nutrients that carry authorised UK claims — creatine, protein and electrolytes — with honest notes on what each is and is not allowed to say.

The plan at a glance

  • Morning: shilajit (pea-sized resin or one capsule) in warm water or milk
  • Pre-training: creatine 3g daily (authorised: increases physical performance in successive bursts of short-term, high-intensity exercise)
  • During/after: electrolytes and protein (protein contributes to growth and maintenance of muscle mass)
  • Evening: ashwagandha with warm milk; early night
  • Rest days: everything except electrolytes

Quick answers

What does a training day look like?

6.30am: warm water; shilajit dissolved in warm water or milk. Breakfast: protein-rich, plus creatine (3g) mixed in a drink. Training (any time): electrolytes in your water bottle if the session is over an hour or you sweat heavily. Within an hour after: a protein-rich meal or shake. Evening: ashwagandha with warm milk and a consistent bedtime. On rest days keep shilajit, creatine, protein and ashwagandha, skip the electrolytes.

What is shilajit and how is it used in training routines?

Shilajit is a tar-like substance that seeps from Himalayan rock, purified and sold as resin, capsules or gummies. In Ayurveda it is classified among the rasayana substances and traditionally associated with strength and vitality — it has no authorised UK health claim, so we describe tradition only. Resin is taken as a pea-sized amount dissolved in warm water; capsules and gummies follow the pack. Our shilajit formats guide and how-to-take guide go deeper.

What can creatine, protein and electrolytes claim?

Creatine: ‘increases physical performance in successive bursts of short-term, high-intensity exercise’ — authorised for adults doing high-intensity exercise at 3g per day. Protein: ‘contributes to growth in muscle mass’ and ‘maintenance of muscle mass’ where a product is a source of protein. Electrolytes: ‘electrolyte solutions contribute to the maintenance of endurance performance during prolonged endurance exercise’ and ‘enhance the absorption of water during physical exercise’, for products meeting the specified sodium and carbohydrate ranges. Read the label to see which claims the product qualifies for.

Do I need to load creatine?

No. The authorised claim is based on 3g a day; a loading phase is optional and not necessary. Micronised creatine monohydrate is the standard, well-studied form. Drink plenty of water.

Where does ashwagandha fit?

In the evening, as the traditional wind-down root — it is not a pre-workout. Ayurveda groups ashwagandha with the balya (strength-giving) herbs, and it is traditionally taken with warm milk after a demanding day. No UK claim; tradition only. Choose root-powder tablets or a KSM-66 extract.

Anything to avoid?

Unpurified or ‘raw’ shilajit from unknown sources (buy tested, branded resin only); ‘testosterone booster’ blends, which cannot lawfully make that claim in the UK unless zinc qualifies; and stacking several stimulant products. If you have kidney issues, are under 18, pregnant, or on medication, check with a pharmacist before creatine, shilajit or ashwagandha.

What does Ayurveda say about exercise?

The classical advice is to exercise daily, in the morning, to ‘half strength’ — light sweat, faster breathing, not exhaustion — with the heaviest training in cool seasons and lighter in summer. Kapha types are pushed hardest, pitta types told to avoid midday heat, vata types kept to moderate, regular movement. Oil massage after training, a proper cooked lunch, and sleep are considered part of the training, not an afterthought. It maps well onto a modern periodised programme.

Shilajit resin, capsules or gummies for training?

Resin is the traditional form and the most economical per dose: one 20g jar lasts one to two months. Capsules are convenient for travel and remove the tar-like taste. Gummies are the newest format and often combine shilajit with ashwagandha or maca — check the sugar content and the actual shilajit milligrams, which are often small. Whichever form, buy purified, tested product from a named brand; unpurified shilajit is the one Ayurvedic product where sourcing matters most.

Food supplements are not a substitute for a varied, balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle. Do not exceed the recommended daily dose. Keep out of reach of young children. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, taking medication or under medical supervision, consult a healthcare professional before use. This guide describes traditional Ayurvedic routines and UK labelling rules; it is not medical advice, and nutrient claims apply only to products whose labels show the qualifying amount.
