Gut Reset: A 4-Week Ayurvedic Digestion Routine (UK Guide)

4-week Ayurvedic digestion routine with triphala, isabgol and probiotics – KantiGlow cover

Gut health is the fastest-growing wellness category in the UK, and it happens to be the subject Ayurveda cares about most: the tradition’s central idea, agni, is about how well you digest. This four-week routine takes the classical Ayurvedic digestive habits — meal timing, warm food, spices, triphala, fibre — and adds the modern staple UK shoppers already buy, a probiotic. Nothing here is a treatment; it is a routine.

The plan at a glance

  • Week 1: meal timing and warm food
  • Week 2: add triphala (evening) and cumin-coriander-fennel tea
  • Week 3: add isabgol (psyllium) fibre with plenty of water
  • Week 4: add a probiotic; keep everything going
  • Kit option: The Digestion Kit (triphala + isabgol)

Quick answers

What are the four weeks?

Week 1 — agni basics. Eat at regular times, make lunch the main meal, eat warm cooked food, sit down to eat, and stop eating three hours before bed. Week 2 — triphala + CCF tea. Triphala tablets or powder with warm water an hour before bed; a cup of cumin, coriander and fennel seed tea after lunch. Week 3 — fibre. One teaspoon of isabgol in a full glass of water in the evening, rising to two if the pack allows, always with a second glass of water. Week 4 — probiotic. A daily probiotic with breakfast. Then keep the whole stack as a routine.

Why does Ayurveda care so much about meal timing?

Ayurveda treats digestion as a fire (agni) that is strongest at midday and weakest late at night, so it asks you to eat your largest meal at lunch, keep dinner light and early, and avoid grazing between meals. Modern time-restricted eating arrives at a similar shape from a different direction. This is a habit, not a claim.

What is CCF tea?

Cumin, coriander and fennel seeds — half a teaspoon of each simmered in 500ml of water for ten minutes, strained, and sipped warm after meals. It is the classic Ayurvedic digestive tea, costs pennies, and uses spices already in most British kitchens.

Triphala and isabgol — what do they do in the plan?

Triphala is a three-fruit rasayana formula traditionally associated with the digestive routine and taken in the evening; isabgol is psyllium husk, almost pure soluble fibre, traditionally taken with warm water or milk. Neither has an authorised UK health claim, so we describe traditional use only; both have separate guides — triphala and isabgol. Always take isabgol with plenty of liquid.

Which probiotic should I choose?

Look for a product that names its strains, gives a colony-forming-unit count (CFU) at end of shelf life rather than at manufacture, and does not need refrigeration if you travel. Prebiotic-plus-probiotic (‘synbiotic’) products are common in Indian brands. Probiotics have no authorised UK health claims either, so ignore any that promise outcomes.

Who should not do this plan?

Anyone with a diagnosed digestive condition should follow their clinician’s advice rather than a general routine. Do not take isabgol if you have swallowing difficulties, and leave two hours between isabgol and any medication. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding or on medication, ask a pharmacist before adding herbs or fibre.

What is a good ‘agni’ lunch and dinner?

Lunch — the main meal — could be kitchari (rice and mung dal cooked with ghee, cumin, turmeric and ginger), or dal with rice and a cooked vegetable, or a warm grain bowl with roasted vegetables and a tahini or yoghurt dressing. Dinner should be smaller and earlier: soup, a light dal, steamed vegetables with rice. Ayurveda suggests eating until about three-quarters full, sitting down, without a screen, and taking a short walk afterwards. Warm water or CCF tea with meals rather than iced drinks.

What if I miss a day or the fibre does not suit me?

Missing a day of anything in this plan is fine — the routine is cumulative, not fragile. If isabgol feels heavy, halve the amount, take it earlier in the evening, and increase the water; if it still does not suit, drop it and keep triphala, the tea and the meal timing, which are the heart of the routine. If triphala causes any discomfort, reduce to one tablet or stop. Anything that persists is a reason to see a GP, not to push through.
